From Language Arts:
I am excited to let you all know about the class novel we will begin after Spring Break. This quarter, we will be reading I am Malala - Young Readers Edition. This is the inspiring true story of Malala Yousafzai told in her own words.

Malala was a young girl living a very simple life in Pakistan in the early 2000s, but she found herself thrust into the international spotlight when she spoke out for girls' rights to education. She began to do interviews on the world stage based on the topic, and that made her the target of the terrorist group, the Taliban. When she was only 15 years old, the group decided to make an example of her so that others wouldn't think of speaking out against them in that country anymore, and she was shot on her way home from school one day. After a miraculous recovery, Malala become a member of the UN, the youngest person to ever win the Nobel Peace Prize, and a voice for girls around the world.

I can't wait to begin our first piece of non fiction this year and see how the students are affected by Malala's touching story. We will need each student to have their own copy of the book this time so that they can have the book to reference outside of class. It can be purchased at any bookstore and Amazon.com, among many other places I'm sure.

I would like for all students to have the book in class with them by Wednesday, April 3rd, so that we can get started on this amazing unit! Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns that I can address. Have a wonderful Spring Break!

PLEASE make sure to purchase the YOUNG READERS EDITION of the book, as other versions are very different and will not match up to what we are reading in class.
Thanks - Mrs. Etheredge

Need community service hours?
Then come join us for  the next EarthSavers Club meeting on April 3rd from 3:15-4:15 in room A216.

Reading Fact....Did you know.....

An analysis of 9.9 million students found that only those students who read 15 minutes or more a day made faster reading gains.  Students who read less than 15 minutes of daily reading time, saw below-average reading gains, putting them at risk of falling behind their peers.  Students who read just over 30 minutes a day, saw the greatest gains of all.

It's hard to imagine that every 90 seconds a child dies from drinking dirty water! There are places in the world where mothers have no choice but to give their babies dirty water, which causes diseases. We can help stop this! Neverthirst is an organization that provides people around the world with clean water. Help Bumpus raise money to build a well through Neverthirst. You can pay on My School Fees or we will be collecting cash from Monday, March 18 to Friday, March 22. Every dollar counts!

Ms. Lollar will be collecting for Team 6-1 through science classes! Let’s make a difference!

Parents- I hope you have heard lots of stories about the book, The Wednesday Wars, we just completed in Language Arts.  The students really seemed to like it! To celebrate we are having a mini "Wednesday Wars Day" on Monday, March 18th.

We will celebrate three major symbols/themes from the book: "The Vietnam War, Cream puffs, and Shakespeare."

Our plan is for students to hear from volunteer speakers during their Language Arts class period.  These speakers are Veteran's and/or have great knowledge about the Vietnam War.  They will speak on topics such as what life was like fighting the war, as well as life at home for citizens during that time.  During our lunch/eta period, students will pick up their food from the cafeteria and bring it back to homeroom, where we will eat together while watching a child-friendly animated version of Shakespeare's play The Tempest. For a treat, we will be providing the students with the tasty little cream puffs they have read so much about in the book.

If there is any part of this day your student needs to "opt out" of for any reason please let me know as soon as possible and I will arrange an alternative for them- I know food allergies are a major issue for some and we want to make sure we have taken care of that before Monday.

HELP...We also are in need of a few more guest speakers! We would like for the speaker to commit to at least one-45 minute time period. If there are any relatives with experience during the Vietnam War that would be willing to speak to our students, please send me a  phone number so I may reach out to them! Thanks everyone!
