Bumpus, Berry and
Simmons Math Team
Interested in being on the Math Team? How is Math Team Class different from Advanced Math?
Emphasis is placed on student responsibility for seeking information,
for doing what is necessary to learn the material, and for keeping up with
both long- and short-term assignments.
Units of study are often interrupted by preparation for a contest or competition. Individual tournament preparation is expected from all students.
Students must have knowledge and ability in math, a curiosity about mathematics
, and a willingness to work hard and to commit to the team.
Students need to learn how to find information they seek.
They should be able to look for answers to their own questions,
without always depending on the teachers.
6th Grade Students must already know: Integer,
fraction, and decimal operations Find a fraction of a whole
number Find a percent of a whole number Convert between
fractions and decimals Express simple probabilities Find area
and perimeter of simple shapes Be able to read and
understand word problems
How To Apply
The placement test will be held at Bumpus Middle School on April 27
and at Berry Middle School on May 4. A student who will be
attending Bumpus, Berry or Simmons can test at either location.
Link to register for the placement test:
Math Team Placement Test

Math Team placements will be based on the
5th grade math test (for upcoming 6th graders), Math Team placement test,
Global Scholar scores, and teacher recommendations.
Parents-
We have started reading our new novel this week, I am Malala (Young Readers Edition). There are still several students that do not have copies of the book. Each student will need their own copy in order to be successful with this unit. Students need to have a copy to read in the classroom with them, not to mention the reading we will do outside of class. I know that some parents have been told that a lot of local bookstores are currently sold out, but as of today Amazon.com shows that hundreds of copies are available there. I understand there might be a waiting period while the book ships, but late is better than never! Thank you for your help in this matter, and if anyone has any issue getting this book for their student, please reach out and let me know!
